Data protection

Based on Article 13 of the Federal Constitution and the provisions of federal data protection legislation, everyone has the right to the protection of their privacy, as well as to protection from misuse of their personal details. The ETH Board complies with these provisions. Personal data is treated according to the dispositions of the Federal Act on Data Protection.

In close cooperation with our hosting providers, we make every effort to protect the databases as well as possible from outside access, data loss, misuse or falsification.

When you access our websites, the following data is stored in log files: IP address, date, time, click behaviour, browser request and general information on the operating system and browser. This data is processed and collected for the purposes of system security and stability and for analysing errors and performance as well as for internal statistical purposes.

This usage data forms the basis for statistical, anonymised evaluations for the purpose of tracking trends so that the ETH Board can improve the information on offer. Under the Federal Act on the Surveillance of Post and Telecommunications, there is a statutory duty to store data on all connections made in the past six months.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link be-tween a server and a client—typically a web server and a browser, or a mail server and a mail client. SSL allows sensitive information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and login credentials to be transmitted securely. Normally, data sent between browsers and web servers is sent in plain text—leaving you vulnerable to eavesdropping. If an attacker is able to intercept all data being sent between a browser and a web server, they can see and use that information. More specifically, SSL is a security protocol. Protocols describe how algorithms should be used. In this case, the SSL protocol determines variables of the encryption for both the link and the data being transmitted. All browsers have the capability to interact with secured web servers using the SSL protocol. How-ever, the browser and the server need what is called an SSL Certificate to be able to establish a secure connection. SSL-secured websites begin with https rather than http.
